President’s Report to 2008 CBSA AGM
Last year was a very full and successful
year but there is still room for improvement in a number of areas.
We held a number of very successful
championships and tournaments, thanks to the tireless workers who made them happen.
Later on tonight we will be discussing our 2008 calendar and there are a number
of gaps for clubs and people to offer support in organizing them. We cannot
expect a very few to continue to provide for the rest.
We hosted at Papanui a very successful
National Billiards and Snooker Championship. Despite the protests of a few that
we were doomed to put the Association into debt, we managed to gain some
sponsorship and cut our cloth accordingly and financially only managed a minor
loss. Many thanks to all who made it the success it was, especially Maurice
Prebble. The Papanui Club now has the legacy of totally refurbished tables and
all the new equipment for their game as a result of the last 3 years
championships there. Thank you Papanui and its section for all the effort put
in on our behalf. This year it is in Auckland and it is also celebrating 100
years of Billiards competition and the introduction of a B grade Billiards
Championship. Plan to be there.
CBSA members competed with distinction around
the country and overseas. Well done. Congratulations also to Gary Oliver and
Paul Wereta in Billiards and to Gary Gillard in Snooker who represented NZ with
distinction at a number of events around the world. See the reports on the
website.
Our interclub Billiards and Snooker
competitions continue to be the envy of the rest of the country, so please
continue to support them. A small committee has refined some of the playing
format and rules and Peter De Groot has put out a booklet explaining these.
It looks good.
The Prize giving was slightly better
supported last year with the prizegiving attached to each of the finals days.
There were still a number of certificates that were not picked up or
arrangements made to pick them up. A similar prizegiving arrangement is
planned for 2008.
During the year we had our monthly meetings
to run the Association. Delegates were conspicuous by their absence. Thanks
to those who did come. It made the day-to-day running happen. Here I must pay
great thanks to our Secretary Wayne Ramsay for his efficient communication with
the clubs and to Steven Church our Treasurer who looked after the finances. I
must also pay thanks to Larry Dillon our Auditor who went through the books and
completed the audit for us.
The NZBSA has set the selection criteria
and procedures for NZ representation this year and it is the job of the clubs
to let their own members know of these as they are sent out from the
Executive. We must keep this flow of communication going. There are a number
of events in both Billiards and Snooker – Oceania, Worlds, Teams, Masters etc
and the NZBSA has been successful in obtaining some advance sponsorship, with
the prospects looking good for further ongoing sponsorship.
The CBSA were unsuccessful in a number of
funding applications and this reflects the difficult climate Charitable Trusts
are in with the large number of applications and limited funds and changing
criteria. Any help in this area would be appreciated. I would like to remind
all that we decided any individual who wanted support needed to furnish all
necessary quotes to complete an application. It still takes a reasonable amount
of time to complete that process.
We have also the possibility of obtaining
sponsorship ourselves for internal and overseas travel, accommodation and entry
fees. This can be achieved with a little work and asking around.
The CBSA pays for any member to become a
referee. If you wish to represent NZ you must be come a referee as well – to
know the rules. See Maurice Prebble who is an examiner. It is a well
worthwhile activity – you could eventually go overseas as a referee once your
representative playing days are over.

We cannot expect a very few to continue to provide for the rest.
We hosted at Papanui a very successful National Billiards and Snooker Championship sponsored by Gary Gilliard and Harcourts Grenadier Real Estate. Thanks a lot Gary. There were a number of new activities we trialed there and they were a success. We are repeating them again this year. We are hosting this event again this year at Papanui and Maurice Prebble has yet again been solving the worlds problems relating to this event and we are well on the way to hosting yet another successful event with some tweaking to the format and the programme. Players who have seen them support them and NZBSA has endorsed them in principle at their last meeting. There are still volunteers needed, so if you can help or if you are asked to help please give us some of your time.

The Prize giving was so poorly supported we had to cancel it in 2005. John Gower offered to run it at the time of the interclub finals. This was done and we did present a number of certificates. As the finals day was run Division after Division, those who played early did not stay for the prize giving. This year we will run all Divisions together so everyone is there at the finish. Since Billiards players were also absent we will run their Prize giving at the time of the Billiards interclub final.

We are hosting this event again this year at Papanui and Maurice Prebble has yet again been solving the worlds problems relating to this event and we are well on the way to hosting yet another successful event. There will be session play for the Snooker, with scheduled start times and nominated referees. There are still volunteers needed, so if you can help or if you are asked to help please give us some of your time.

It replaces the cancelled Pakistan World Champs from last year.

Later on tonight we will be discussing our 2005 calendar and there are still a few gaps for clubs and people to offer support in organizing them. We cannot expect a very few to continue to provide for the rest. We competed with distinction around the country, having both the National Billiards and Snooker Champions coming from Christchurch. Well done.
Our interclub Billiards and Snooker competitions continue to be the envy of the rest of the country. The inaugural Snooker Shop Billiards and Snooker knockout competitions were well supported and hopefully can continue to improve this year. Thank you Dave Greenwood for your support.
The Prizegiving was only moderately supported and although wet outside was enjoyable. Can we make it a focus this year to try and get all prizewinners to actually attend? I have here the photos of the prizewinners who were present. After this can we please put names to pictures so I can put them on our CBSA website.
The rooms are still looking good and you will notice that we have purchased two magnificent trophy cabinets to put all of our trophies on display. We need a couple of tradespeople to fix the bases and to re polish the woodwork on the cabinets. Are there any offers? We also need the services of a plumber to replace the 3 toilets we have out there. Again any offers?

We were successful in obtaining the National Championships for the next 3 years to be held at Papanui. Maurice Prebble has yet again been solving the worlds problems relating to this event and we are well on the way to hosting yet another successful event. There are still volunteers needed, so if you can help or if you are asked to help please give us some of your time.
We are also hosting the Billiards and Snooker at Hornby as part of the South Island Masters Games in October. This is for the over 40's and although it does cost to enter you can win medals. Just ask Bill Earle.
When we cover the annual accounts you will see that we were successful in obtaining quite a bit of sponsorship last year and still only made $144.84 excess income over expenditure for the year. With the new Internal Affairs regulations coming in some of our recent applications have been declined so we will have to watch finances carefully this year.
